Sherlock’s Slums: Mapping Dangerous Spaces in Conan Doyle and The Strand Magazine

چکیده

The use of an approach derived from literary criticism to deconstruct the geographical constituents and meanings of literary texts is questionable. Despite Franco Moretti’s quixotic attempt to map the cartographic implications of various works in The Atlas of the European Novel, there remains a lingering doubt over how in touch critics are with what Jacques Derrida termed “ontopology”: “an axiomatic linking indissociably the ontological value of present-being (on) to its situation, to the stable and presentable determination of a locality, the topos of a territory” (Derrida, 1994, p.82). By employing ontopological thinking as a theoretical frame-work, a new perspective can be cast on the geographical threads that unite Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories and the enormous success of the platform in which they first appeared, George Newnes’ The Strand Magazine.

Disguising a Suicide as a Homicide

To the Editor: While reviewing the scientific literature concerning the Materia Medica contained in Sherlock Holmes' adventures, I have fallen upon 2 articles published 2 decades ago in The American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology. Both articles reported a case of suicide disguised as a homicide, one in Poland and the other in the United States. Correctly, authors pointed out that th...

Proposing Standard Library Support for the C++ Detection Idiom

This paper describes a coding pattern, termed the C++ detection idiom, powered by the void_t metafunction recently accepted into the C++17 standard library. A fully-implemented toolkit of interfaces to this idiom is then presented and proposed for future standardization. Detection is, or ought to be, an exact science. . . . — SIR ARTHUR IGNATIUS CONAN DOYLE

On the Limits of Learning with Computational Models

This paper provides a short discussion concerning the state of the art in Bayesian learning theory with an emphasis on performance guarantees. In the second part of the paper, we outline some negative results indicating that there is no hope for a general learning algorithm that is computable and implementable, but powerful enough to learn any computable data. “When you have eliminated the impo...

ConanDoyle-neg: Annotation of negation in Conan Doyle stories

In this paper we present ConanDoyle-neg, a corpus of stories by Conan Doyle annotated with negation information. The negation cues and their scope, as well as the event or property that is negated have been annotated by two annotators. The inter-annotator agreement is measured in terms of F-scores at scope level. It is higher for cues (94.88 and 92.77), less high for scopes (85.04 and 77.31), a...
